Earlier today, a new sportswriting project was announced called The Classical. They’re looking to raise $50,000. Here’s why:
Every day, The Classical will deliver several regular columns, a host of quick, random goodness, and a fun, smart community for talking about the sports world. There will be long features (a 25,000-word piece on Pete Alexander, say, or introductions to particular niches of sports fandom) and contributions from the world: prizewinning novelists, internet celebrities, guys and girls we went to school with who are unappreciated geniuses, members of the public.
We say: this is awesome. At The Good Men Project, sportswriting as an effort, as something more than just writing about sports, has been a priority, and based on the cast of characters running The Classical—including regular GMP contributor Bethlehem Shoals and contributors Eric Freeman and Eric Nusbaum—there’s no doubt that they feel the same way.
Athletes play many of the more visible roles in our society, and what they do means something to a whole lot of people. For both men and women alike, amateur and professional sports help to define and influence ideas of beauty, achievement, and action in society, and this goes beyond just the reductive concept of their being “role models,” though this matters too.
So, throw some money their way. We will be. The more publications taking a serious and thoughtful look at sports, the better, and we’re confident that The Classical will give nothing less.
